Mike is the current incumbent Republican County Commissioner for District One and is the Chair of the County Commission. Mike was first elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016 with 67% of the vote. Mike is running for a final term in 2020 and is looking forward to earning your vote.
Mike is a fourth-generation resident of Weld County growing up on the farm that his great grandparents homesteaded. Mike graduated from Highland High School in 1980 and Colorado State University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business. Returning to the family farm west of Ault, Mike farmed and ranched until 2001. At that time, Mike decided to retire from farming and team up with his wife of 37 years, Janine, to help operate their current business, J9 Crop Insurance located in Ault. Mike and Janine have two children; Pete, 40, and Lynsey, 36, who both work for Covenant Testing Technologies.
In addition to farming and running the family business, Mike was elected to the Highland Weld Re-9 School Board serving from 1997-2005, the last 6 years as President showing Mike’s leadership abilities. During that time, Mike served on the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) Board of Directors for 5 years and was the 2005 CASB President. Afterwards, Mike served on the Aims Community College Board of Trustees from 2009-2013.
In addition to currently serving as the Chair of the of Weld County Commissioners, Mike serves on the Ault Fire Protection Board, the E911 Board (chair), the United Way Board of Directors, the North I-25 Coalition and the Hwy 85 Coalition.
These experiences demonstrate Mike’s commitment to his community and his passion for education and first responders.
Mike’s experience as an elected official, his background in agriculture and business, and his vast knowledge of water and property rights have allowed Mike to effectively represent your district as County Commissioner. Weld County has a tremendous history of local, homegrown leaders that have made this county great.
